How to Price DTF Gang Sheets by the Inch
How to price DTF gang sheets: cost your film, ink and labor, set a per-inch or per-size rate, and use fixed sheet widths so pricing stays simple.
Plenty of shops figure out how to price DTF gang sheets the same way: look at what a few other shops charge, pick a number a little under or over, and hope the margin is there. That works until film goes up, a wholesale customer orders forty sheets at once, or you add UV DTF and realize you never actually costed it. Pricing by the inch, on a fixed sheet width, fixes most of that.
This guide walks through the math behind a per-inch rate, how to turn it into sizes and tiers, how to treat UV DTF and single transfers, and how to put live prices in front of customers so you stop quoting by hand. How to price DTF gang sheets: start with your real cost per linear inch
Every pricing decision gets easier once you know what one inch of printed sheet actually costs you. Not the film alone. The whole inch: film, ink, adhesive powder, labor, machine time, overhead, and the waste you will never get back.
Because your sheet width is fixed, cost scales with length. That is why the useful unit is the linear inch, not the square inch. A square-inch cost is fine for internal analysis, but customers buy length, so build your rate on length.
What goes into the inch
- Film. Roll cost divided by usable inches on the roll. Subtract the lead-in and tail you cannot print on.
- Ink and powder. Pull your consumable spend for a month and divide by the inches you printed that month. This gives you an average coverage cost that already includes white underbase and heavy fills.
- Labor. Time to set up, print, powder, cure, inspect, trim and pack a typical sheet, divided by its length. Include the time you spend fixing files, because you will spend it.
- Overhead. Rent, power, equipment payments, software subscriptions, insurance. Total it monthly and divide by the inches you expect to print.
- Waste and reprints. Misprints, head strikes, bad uploads you reprinted for free. Track it as a percentage of output and add it to the inch.
- Selling costs. Payment processing, marketplace fees and any percentage your software takes. If a tool charges you a cut of sales, that cut comes off every inch forever, which is worth reading about in flat fee vs percentage builder pricing.
A worked example with your own numbers
Run it in five lines with your own invoices: divide the price of a roll by its usable inches to get film per inch. Divide last month's ink and powder spend by last month's printed inches to get consumables per inch. Take your hourly labor rate times the hands-on hours a typical 60 inch sheet needs, then divide by 60 to get labor per inch. Divide monthly overhead by the inches you expect to print that month, and add a waste allowance of a few percent on top.
Add the five lines together and you have your hard cost per linear inch. Whatever your number is, write it down and date it. It is the floor under every price you set, and you will come back to it in the last section of this post.
Fixed width, variable length: why it simplifies pricing
Your printer already thinks this way. Film comes on a roll at a fixed width, and the only thing that changes from job to job is how far the roll advances. When your pricing follows the same shape, everything lines up: one width per product, one rate per inch, one number to change when costs move.
Fixed width also removes an entire class of customer confusion. Nobody has to ask whether a 12 by 18 sheet is the same price as an 18 by 12. There is no per-square-inch math to argue about. The customer picks a length, sees a price, and the only question left is how to fill the width well.
A few practical rules that come with this model:
- Set a minimum length that covers your fixed handling time. A 3 inch order costs you nearly as much labor as a 12 inch one.
- Decide your increment. Pricing per single inch is the most flexible. Rounding to the nearest inch or two keeps totals clean.
- Cap the maximum length at what you can cure, trim and ship without folding or creasing.
- Price the length printed, not the area used. If a customer leaves empty film, they still bought those inches.
Wasted space is the customer's cost, not yours, so you do not need a penalty for poor nesting. What you do need is a builder that shows them the total as it grows, which we cover further down.
Per-inch vs per-size pricing tiers
Once you have a per-inch cost and a target margin, you have to decide how customers see it. There are three common models, and most shops end up on a hybrid.

The hybrid works because it keeps the per-inch logic while giving customers a reason to buy longer. A rate that steps down at, say, 36 and 120 inches makes a 120 inch sheet feel like a deal while still sitting comfortably above your cost floor.
Setting the step-downs
Pick breakpoints that match your workflow, not round numbers for their own sake. If a 60 inch sheet fits your curing setup and shipping box, that is a natural tier. Keep the drop between tiers small enough that a customer never saves money by ordering more than they need, and check that the lowest tier still clears your cost with room for a reprint.
Pricing UV DTF separately from DTF
UV DTF is not DTF with a different ink. It uses a two-layer film with a laminate step, prints white, color and a varnish layer on every pass, runs at slower print speeds and takes noticeably more hands-on labor. Rolls are often narrower, so an inch of length carries fewer decals. If you copy your DTF rate onto UV DTF, you will lose money on every inch and not know why.
Run the same cost-per-inch exercise for UV DTF as its own product: its own film cost, its own ink and varnish spend, its own labor time, its own width. Then set its own per-inch rate and its own tiers. In your store and builder, keep it as a separate product with a separate fixed width so the two never share a price table.

Charging for transfers by size vs full sheets
Not everyone wants a gang sheet. A customer with one design and one shirt wants one transfer, sized to fit. You can serve that without abandoning per-inch pricing if you think about what the transfer costs you on the roll.
Deriving a by-size price
- Take the transfer's height as placed on your fixed-width roll. A 10 inch tall design consumes 10 inches of length if it prints alone.
- Multiply by your per-inch rate to get the base.
- Add a handling amount that covers trimming, packing and shipping a single piece. This is where most shops under-charge.
- Offer a few size buckets (for example small, medium, large, extra large) so customers do not have to measure to the quarter inch.
If you gang multiple customers' single transfers onto one sheet yourself, your real cost drops because the width is shared. You can pass some of that on with a price per square inch for by-size transfers, while keeping per-linear-inch pricing for full gang sheets. Just be careful that the two tables cannot be gamed: a customer should not be able to buy ten small transfers cheaper than the sheet those transfers would fill.

Rush, minimums and wholesale tiers
Your base rate assumes normal turnaround, normal order sizes and retail customers. Anything outside that deserves its own line.
- Rush. Charge for it as a percentage of the order or a flat add-on, and make the cutoff time explicit. Rush is worth real money because it reorders your whole day, so do not give it away.
- Minimums. A minimum order value or minimum length keeps tiny orders from eating your labor. Pair it with a clear message in the cart so customers are not surprised.
- Wholesale tiers. Reward volume you can actually see: total inches per order, or total spend per month. Per-order tiers are easier to run through a builder. Monthly tiers work better as customer-account pricing or coupon codes.
- Wholesale channels. If you list on a wholesale marketplace such as Faire, remember the marketplace's own terms when setting that price list. Cost it as a separate channel, not a discount off retail.
Whatever you add, keep it as an adjustment on top of the per-inch rate rather than a second price table. One rate, many modifiers, is far easier to maintain than five rates.

Reviewing margins as film and ink costs change
Your cost per inch is a snapshot, and consumables move. Put a recurring reminder on the calendar, quarterly at minimum, to redo the exercise from the first section with fresh invoices.
What to check each review
- Film and ink invoices. Recompute the per-inch cost from what you actually paid, not what you paid last time.
- Reprint rate. If it crept up, your waste allowance is too low. Fix the cause too, usually bad uploads, and adjust the allowance in the meantime.
- Labor per inch. Faster printing or a new trimmer should lower it. New staff or more file fixing will raise it.
- Tier spread. Make sure your lowest tier still clears cost with a cushion, and that step-downs have not been eroded by cost increases.
- UV DTF separately. Its costs move independently of DTF. Review it as its own product every time.
