UV DTF vs DTF: Differences and Which to Sell
UV DTF vs DTF compared: what each transfer sticks to, how the process differs, how to price them and how to sell both from one gang sheet builder.
Somebody messages your shop asking for "a DTF transfer for a tumbler," and you have to decide whether to explain, sell them the wrong thing, or turn them away. That confusion is the whole UV DTF vs DTF problem in one sentence. The two products share three letters and almost nothing else: different ink, different film, different equipment, different surfaces, different customers.
This guide lays out the difference between DTF and UV DTF in plain terms, then gets into how the two affect your sheet sizes, your pricing and your product pages. What DTF is and where it is used
DTF stands for direct to film. You print a design in water-based pigment ink onto a clear PET film, coat the wet ink with a hot-melt adhesive powder, cure the powder so it bonds to the ink, and end up with a transfer. The customer lays it on a garment, applies heat and pressure with a press, peels the film and the design is now part of the fabric. Your RIP mirrors the design and lays down the white underbase, so customers upload right-reading art and never think about either.
DTF took over custom apparel because it works on almost any fabric without pretreatment. Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, canvas, dark or light, it all takes the transfer. Shops sell DTF three ways:
- Gang sheets: the customer fills a long sheet with as many designs as fit and pays by the length. This is the core product for most transfer shops.
- Transfers by size: a single design at a set size, priced per piece.
- Finished apparel: the shop prints the transfer and applies it to the shirt itself.
The finished DTF transfer is soft, stretches with the fabric, and survives washing when applied correctly. It is a fabric product first and last.
What UV DTF is and where it is used
UV DTF answers a different question: how do you get a full-color, durable, permanent-looking decal onto a hard object without screen printing, sublimation blanks or a laser? The process prints UV-curable ink onto a film, cures it instantly under UV light, and laminates a second film on top. The result is a two-layer sandwich: a carrier film on the bottom and a clear transfer film on top with the design in between.
The customer peels the sandwich off the backing, sticks it to a clean surface, rubs it down, and peels away the top film. What is left is a raised, glossy, waterproof image bonded to the object. No heat, no press, no special equipment. That is why UV DTF transfers get called "UV DTF stickers" so often: they apply like a sticker but hold up like a printed graphic.
Typical UV DTF customers are tumbler and drinkware sellers, candle makers, people personalizing phone cases and laptops, small brands labeling glass jars and bottles, and sign or woodcraft makers who want color without paint. It is a hard-goods product first and last.

Two rows matter most for a shop owner. First, application: DTF needs a heat press, so your DTF customer is almost always another maker or a small business. UV DTF needs nothing, so your UV DTF customer can be anyone, including the end consumer. Second, equipment: the two are made on entirely different printers with entirely different consumables. Curing is the real dividing line
Everything else follows from how the ink dries. Pigment ink stays flexible because the adhesive powder does the bonding and the ink itself sits in the fabric. UV ink polymerizes into a hard plastic film within seconds. Hard plastic is great on a tumbler and terrible on a t-shirt, which is why UV DTF cannot replace DTF.
Surfaces: fabric vs hard goods
The simplest way to route a customer to the right product is to ask what they are putting it on.
- Anything worn or washed in a machine: DTF. Shirts, hoodies, hats with a flat panel, tote bags, onesies, aprons, jerseys.
- Anything rigid and smooth: UV DTF. Stainless tumblers, glass, ceramic mugs, acrylic, sealed wood, painted metal, plastic cases and phone cases.
- Gray areas: canvas sneakers, rubber, raw wood, textured plastic and silicone. These sometimes take one or the other, sometimes neither. Test before you promise.
UV DTF also has a curvature limit. Tight curves and compound curves (a sphere, a heavily tapered cup) stretch the film more than it wants to go, and the edges lift over time. Gentle curves like a straight tumbler wall or a wine glass stem are fine. Worth a sentence on your product page, because "will this work on my tumbler" is the pre-sale question you will get most.
Sheet sizes and pricing differences
This is where the two products differ in ways that hit your store setup, not just your production floor.
Width follows the film roll
A gang sheet has a fixed width set by the roll of film your printer runs, and a variable length the customer pays for. DTF film is commonly sold in wider rolls than UV DTF film, so most shops end up with a DTF gang sheet product that is wider than their UV DTF gang sheet product. Your exact widths depend on your printers. They are almost never the same number, so a design that fits across a DTF sheet may not fit across a UV DTF sheet.
Cost per inch is different
UV DTF consumables generally run higher per square inch than DTF. You are paying for UV ink, a varnish layer, two films instead of one and slower print speeds. Your UV DTF price per inch of length should reflect that even before you consider that the customer is getting a product that needs no press. Copying your DTF price table onto your UV DTF product is a quick way to sell at a loss. File rules diverge too
Both products want transparent PNG artwork at print resolution, 300 DPI at the final printed size, and the low-resolution, off-sheet and overlap checks in a good builder apply to both. But UV DTF adds an extra concern: thin lines and small isolated pieces. A tiny floating dot in a design will print fine as DTF because the adhesive holds it, but in UV DTF each isolated element is a separate little sticker that can peel or tear during application. Which one to sell first as a new shop
If you can only afford one production line to start, the honest answer for most people is DTF, for a few reasons.
- Bigger market of repeat buyers. Apparel decorators order gang sheets every week. Tumbler makers order UV DTF less often and in smaller runs.
- Lower cost of entry. A DTF setup with a shaker and oven is generally cheaper to get running than a UV printer with lamination.
- Simpler pricing story. One width, one length price, done. Customers already understand what a DTF gang sheet is.
UV DTF is the better first product only in specific cases: you already sell drinkware or blanks and want to add decoration, your local market is saturated with DTF shops, or you plan to sell finished personalized items directly to consumers rather than transfers to other makers. UV DTF has a genuine advantage there because the buyer does not need a press.
The common path is DTF first, UV DTF added once the DTF line is paying for itself and existing customers start asking for tumbler decals. Selling both without mixing up your price tables
Once you sell both, the risk shifts from production to configuration. A UV DTF order priced off the DTF table, or a DTF-width design landing in a UV queue, costs you the whole order. A few rules keep it clean.
Make them separate products, not options
Do not sell "gang sheet" with a dropdown for DTF or UV. Sell "DTF gang sheet" and "UV DTF gang sheet" as two products, each with its own width, its own length sizes and its own price table. The customer chooses the product before they upload anything, so the builder they land in already knows the sheet width and enforces it. Name things so staff cannot confuse them
Put "UV" in the product name, the SKU prefix, the download filename and the order label. When a print file lands on the shared drive at 11pm, the person running the UV printer should know at a glance that it is theirs.
Keep one order flow
Separate products, same checkout, same customer account, same orders list. Splitting the two across different sites or different checkouts doubles your admin work and halves the chance a DTF customer ever notices you sell UV.
Set expectations for turnaround separately
UV DTF often runs on a slower printer and may cure or laminate in batches. If your DTF turnaround is next day and UV is three days, say so on each product page rather than promising one number for both.
Common customer questions to answer on your product pages
Most of the support load from selling both comes from the same handful of questions. Put the answers on the product pages and in your store FAQ so customers do not have to ask.
- Which one do I need? Fabric means DTF, hard surface means UV DTF. Say it in the first line of each product description.
- Do I need a heat press? Yes for DTF, no for UV DTF. Explain the peel-stick-rub-peel steps for UV so buyers know what they are getting.
- Will UV DTF survive the dishwasher? Give a straight answer based on your own testing. Many shops recommend hand washing for longevity and say so.
- Can I put UV DTF on a shirt? No. Link to your DTF product from the UV page for exactly this question.
- Why is the UV sheet narrower and more expensive per inch? Different film, different ink, no press required. Customers accept the price when they understand the reason.
- What file should I upload? Transparent PNG at print resolution, and for UV DTF avoid tiny floating pieces. A builder that warns on low resolution and overlap saves you from writing this explanation twice a day.
- How do I apply it? Short instructions per product, including press temperature and time for DTF and surface cleaning for UV DTF.
